Incorporating the nature area along the Moreletaspruit from Solomon Mahlangu to Serene Streets, as well as the nature area along the Constantiaspruit joining the Moreletaspruit from Veldrift Street.

Friends Groups is a dynamic movement within The Wildlife and Environment Society of South Africa (WESSA). Friends Groups encourage communities to become more involved with their local environment and take responsibility for its continued well-being.

The Friends Groups concept is a WESSA initiative which began in the Western Cape in the early 1980s. In 1985, the ‘Friends of Nature Areas’ project was established with the objective of involving the public in safeguarding natural resources and working with the owners or managing authorities towards this end. At first, the scheme focussed only on nature reserves but later became a widely used model applied to any area that needed protection and support, including historical heritage sites.

Friends of Serene Valley consists of local volunteers who band together to conserve and rehabilitate or prevent destruction of this wonderful nature resource on our doorstep.

The Serene Valley is part of the green belt along the Moreleta Spruit in Garsfontein, Pretoria, South Africa. It is roughly in the shape of a "Y" with Serene Street to the north, private properties along the east, Solomon Mahlangu drive to the south and Gilda Street and private properties to the west. The short arm of the "Y" runs along the Constantia Spruit from Velddrift Street in the west to where it joins the Moreleta Spruit.

The committee identified fencing and restriction of access to the nature area as an initial project. Other projects are to clean up litter, remove alien vegetation, identify and tag trees, plant new trees and, identify bird species and monitor the wetland.

WESSA is a non profit organisation and Friends of Serene relies on the help, donations and contributions of the community. Please visit their website to see how you can help make a difference. Residents and interested parties are invited to apply for an annual membership to the Friends of Serene Valley (Friends of Moreletaspruit) for R200 per household. Funds collected will be used to complete projects identified by the Friends of Moreletaspruit Committee.
